Super Sparks Shines in Sheffield

Seven Killerwhales swimmers made the long journey up the M1 to the Ponds Forge 50 metre pool where Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club held their annual ‘Robin Hood’ meeting.

In a fabulous weekend’s racing the ‘whales brought home a haul of 27 top three trophies from just 46 swims.

Honours were shared between 13 year old Molly Sparks and 11 year old Connor Kearns who both won 5 gold’s each.

Connor also won the Top Boy award for the Gala however it was Molly Sparks who really stole the show with some exceptional swims to claim new personal best times every time she got in the water. Molly was completely dominant in the 13 year old age group taking top spot in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke and 50 and 100 ‘fly. With only one swim outside the top three all weekend she also won silver in the 200 free and bronze in the 100 m version.

Connor took complete control of the 11 years age group with wins in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke winning the latter by a huge margin of 16 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. He added more gold in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle. Two silvers in the 50 fly and 100 free were complemented by bronze in the 50 freestyle.

There was gold too for 15 year old Tom Webb in the 50 freestyle and he was within 0.01 of doubling his tally in the 100 metre version of the same stroke but had to settle for silver on this occasion. A second silver in the 200 free and three bronze medals on the 200 medley, 100 fly and 400 freestyle completed a fine weekend for Tom.

16 year old Lewis Clifford-Stephenson added the last Gold medal with a powerful swim in the 50 breaststroke to win in the 16+ age group also picking up a bronze with an equally impressive swim in the 50 fly. Lewis topped his performances by capturing his first National Qualifying Time of the season in the 100 breaststroke.

Kalei Andrews(17)  picked up two silver medals in the 200 backstroke and 50 fly in the open age group events whilst Katinka Merchan, also 17 won bronze in the 50 back and 50 fly with some determined swims.

Overall an excellent first gala for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
